With the celebration of 50 years of Star Trek in full swing, and with a few new followers here on my blog, I’m curious to know, how many of you are fellow Trekkies?

If you’ve read any of my books, you might have figured out that I’m a total Trekkie. But just in case you missed some of the subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle references, here’s a recap:

dataIn Dreamthief, Olive’s boyfriend is named Brent. In an earlier draft, I had Olive explain that she’d liked Brent Spiner, the actor, as a teenager, and so that was one of the reasons she’d liked her current love interest. Brent, the boyfriend, even looked like the actor. If you’re not as geeky as I am, Brent Spiner played Data. In reality, he was one of my fave characters. Who are your favorite Star Trek characters?

Also in Dreamthief, Olive is half-elven, half-human. Again, in an earlier draft, Olive remarked on how unique she is because she’s the daughter of an elf and a human. That hardly happens ever, right? I mean, sure, there’s Spock, Tanis Half-Elven from Dragonlance, Shea Ohmsford of Terry Brooks’ The Sword of Shannara, even Voldemort. (Okay, maybe she’s not as unique as she thinks.)

In Spellweaver, Olive remarks that, “She’s a doctor, not a chef.” And then continues by saying that she purposely uses Star Trek references around the Wults because they don’t get it. FYI, Wults are the ancestors of Vikings living in Faythander, so no Star Trek. No TVs, actually.

Leave me a comment and tell me which references I’m missing! If not in my books, then where else? Here’s on of my favorites from Big Bang Theory…

  4. I used to ALWAYS watch Star Trek when I was a kid,but I must admit ,I haven`t watched it since I was 15 or so. Maybe I will get back into it!

  5. I am right now watching The Next Generation, half through season 2, yeah Data is great, one of few that are always intriguing and glad to see in every episode, but there is Lore too, funny how can you have love and hate for one actor on the same time.

  6. Hi. I am a Trekkie. I admit it. My favorite series were Voyager, and Deep Space Nine. I love watching the rerun for all the series, and I’m loving the movies. Great special effects!

  7. I never considered myself a trekkie or trekker, but since I’ve watched every show (but not many of Enterprise) and movie it’s hard to deny.

  8. Oh goodness, I loved them all. Spock and Bones in TOS, Data and Wesley in TNG, and so many more. I can’t pick one favorite character. And Big Bang is the BEST show on TV! If I don’t watch anything else, I have to have my BBT fix.

  9. I love old school Star Trek. My daughters are fans of the old and new Star Trek stuff and they live the fan fiction stuff too.

    1. I think that’s the great thing about Star Trek. My mom loved the old series and I love The Next Generation. Either way, we both loved Star Trek and it was something we could both relate to.

  10. Congrats on the conference! And how did I NOT know that Star Trek was getting another series? Lol.

  11. Love Star Trek since it first came on TV when I was 6 yrs old. Back then some parents considered it too risqué! Lol

  12. Okay I am out numbered but I am neither a trekkie but nor am I a Star Wars fan. I am sacrilege I know. I am so sorry…. But I love books about hot men turning into dragons, or merman coming out from the sea with water droplets running down their bodies! Does that count?

    1. LOL, your comment is totally cracking me up. Men turning into dragons or mermen totally counts. Have you read Holly Kelly’s RISING series. There’s a good dose of hot mermen in those. 😉

    1. There’s nothing wrong with being a fan since the 60’s! But now you have to tell me which series was your favorite? I grew up with The Next Generation so I’m partial to it. My mom loves the original.

    1. Oh yay! I knew I wasn’t alone, LOL. Do you have a favorite Star Trek? I grew up with TNG but I also loved the new movie that just came out.
