Some people ask how I manage to write with five small kids. My honest answer: I don’t know how to manage five small kids without writing! It’s definitely my escape. Since I started writing in the fall of 2010, my goal has always been to write 1,000 words every week day at minimum. I’m not sure if the actual word count is as important as consistency. I think binge writing works for some, but for me, writing is not like riding a bicycle. If I go too long without writing, when I start again I feel like I have to relearn what I already know.
Also, I know some writers feel like they need quiet, lit candles, music, an entire ritual to get in the mood for writing, but with five little ones, I’ve learned to write through the chaos.
